Fifty years ago, one of the largest community college districts in the country got its start.

This week, Maricopa Community Colleges kicks off a yearlong celebration of education.

It began with the formation of the district in 1962 through a public vote, though Phoenix College began in 1920. Now, there are 10 campuses -- including Mesa Community College, Chandler-Gilbert Community College and Tempe's Rio Salado College in the East Valley -- as well as a major online presence.

A new website - – shares the colleges’ history, as well as commentary from more than 300 current and former students, faculty and staff, community members and leaders who helped establish the district. The website also features a detailed timeline and lists events open to the public that are scheduled throughout the next year.
