Wilkes University has received approval from the Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education to offer degree programs in Mesa.

Wilkes is one of five new colleges and universities opening sites in Mesa in the next year as part of the city’s initiative for economic development.

The board approved Wilkes’ application for a license to operate and offer programs on Aug. 23.

Beginning in January, Wilkes will offer master’s degrees in business administration, classroom technology, creative writing, engineering management and teaching English as a second language. Starting in fall 2013, Wilkes is scheduled to offer undergraduate programs in mechanical engineering, accounting and entrepreneurship, as well as a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.
