The Apache Junction Unified School District honored former Apache Junction Police Officer Bill Virtue at its Tuesday governing board meeting.

A 23-year veteran of the police department, Virtue served as the district's Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) Program Coordinator, working with hundreds of Apache Junction elementary school students in an effort to help them live a drug-free life.

Virtue stepped down from the program after retiring from the police department last spring.
