The Higley Unified School District is exploring whether to ask voters in November to pass a K-3 budget override, which would give the district an annual $1.4 million.

Higley district judging support for override

The Higley Unified School District is exploring whether to ask voters in November to pass a K-3 budget override, which would give the district an annual $1.4 million. The override is seen as a way to reduce class sizes, particularly in kindergarten through third-grade classrooms. It could also be used to provide instructional assistants, additional instructional materials and improve instructional support for those grades.

The district is asking the Higley community to take an online survey to learn more and to gauge whether there is interest in voters approving such an override.

According to the survey, the money would allow the district to employ 32 more teachers, lowering class sizes from an average range of 25 to 29, to an average of 22 to 25 students for grades K-3.

Homeowners’ yearly tax rate would increase by $23 per $100,000 of home value. Business owners’ yearly tax rate would increase by $50.06 per $100,000 of business property value, according to the survey.
