Staff in the Higley Unified School District will not have the spring furlough day that was built into the district’s 2011-12 budget, after all.

District administrators told the governing board last month they have the funds to cover salaries for staff, rather than asking them to take a furlough day that would have saved the district about $190,000.

The district was concerned there would be a mid-year cut, according to the governing board agenda item, which prompted the planning of a furlough day. It is the second furlough day taken off the district’s budget plans in the last year.

East Valley school districts have used a variety of measures — including furlough days — to deal with state budget cuts to education over the last several years.
