Education briefs: CGCC hosts math competition for E.V. junior high students

Chandler-Gilbert Community College is inviting all East Valley junior high schools to participate in the ninth annual Junior High Excellence in Mathematics Competition.

The event, open to seventh- and eighth- graders, will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 24 at the college's Pecos Campus, 2626 E. Pecos Road, Chandler. The competition was created by the college's mathematics division with the intent of supporting the efforts of local community schools to motivate and encourage today's youth to be successful in mathematics.

Principals and teachers are encouraged to register their students for the competition. Interested students and parents may choose to contact their school to find out if their school is participating.

Holiday closures

Mesa Unified School District students will be released early Friday. Schools will be closed Dec. 22 through Jan. 2. The district office will close Dec. 24. Students and staff return Jan. 5. Report cards will be distributed beginning Jan. 12. Parent-teacher conferences will be held that week with elementary schools dismissing early. Check with your school for more information.

Vacation? Check calendar

Parents planning vacations for 2009 should check the Mesa school district calendar for 2009-10. For the first time, the district will take an entire week off in October, with fall break planned for Oct. 12-16. In addition, there will be no school Jan. 19 for Martin Luther King Day and Feb. 16 for President's Day. Spring break will be March 16-20 with a spring holiday on Friday, April 10. The last day of classes is May 21. Classes resume in the fall on Aug. 12. Thanksgiving holiday will be Nov. 26-27 and winter holiday will begin Dec. 21. Register for Winter Follies

Registration is under way for Winter Follies, a holiday intersession camp for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade. Three schools will host the camps: Hancock, Frye and Hull elementary schools. Camps will run 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. most weekdays, Dec. 22 through Jan. 5. No camps will be held Dec. 25 or Jan. 1. Hancock and Hull camps also will be closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 26. Prices range from $22 per day to $32 for a field-trip day. New student enrollment is $40. Students return to school Dec. 6. Governing board meeting

The Chandler Unified School District governing board will meet Dec. 17 at the district office, 1525 W. Frye Road. The 5:45 p.m. study session will be a report on the voluntary drug testing program. At 6:30 p.m. there will be a reception for retiring longtime board members Karen Clark and Charlotte Patterson, followed by a regular meeting at 7 p.m. The agenda includes a vote on the junior high and high school course catalogs for the 2009-10 school year and final approval to open the new Chandler Traditional Junior High School on the Pathways campus next school year.

Improvement plans

The Tempe Union High School District governing board will meet for a study session 6:15 p.m. Wednesday in the district office, 500 W. Guadalupe Road. This year, each school is presenting its school improvement plan to the governing board. Desert Vista High School will present Wednesday. A regular governing board meeting will follow at 7 p.m. The board is expected to make a decision on new band uniforms for McClintock High School. The board will also hear about the process to select a new associate superintendent, a position that needs to be filled.

Start, end date suggestions

The Kyrene Elementary School District's calendar committee has recommended an Aug. 10 start date for the 2009-10 school year and a May 26 end date. The new governing board that takes office in January will make the final decision.

2009-10 school year

The Tempe Elementary School District governing board voted this week to approve the 2009-10 school year calendar. Classes will begin Aug. 12 and end May 28. Fall break will be Oct. 12-16. Winter break schedule

The last day of classes for Tempe Union High School District and Kyrene Elementary School District prior to winter break is Thursday; the last day for Tempe Elementary School District is Friday, with some schools on an early release schedule that day. Classes in all three districts resume Monday, Jan. 5.

Recess Camp

Tempe parents whose children are not already registered in Kid Zone, the city's after-school program, can call Monday to see if there are any openings in the Winter Recess Camp. The camp will run 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 22-23, Dec. 29-31 and Jan. 2. It will run 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 24. Cost is $69 for the first week and $94 for the second week. Finley Farms Elementary holds strings concert

Finley Farms Elementary School is presenting its fifth and sixth grades strings concert at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the school's multipurpose room, 375 S. Columbus Drive.

The school also is hosting its third grade music program at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the multipurpose room.

Higley High schedules holiday baseball camp

High school baseball players are invited to sign up for Higley High School's Holiday Baseball Camp, which will be 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Dec. 29-31 at the school, 4068 E. Pecos Road.

Early registration ends Friday. The cost is $80 and can only be paid at the Higley Unified School District office, 2935 S. Recker Road, Gilbert. Payment cannot be accepted at the camp. Those registering after Friday will have to pay $95.

The camp will focus on the fundamentals of throwing, base running, infield and outfield play, speed training, catching and hitting. The coach, his staff and returning varsity lettermen will be on hand to assist in instructing the athletes. Campers need to bring their cleats, bat, glove, hat and a sweatshirt or jacket.

Higley board has full agenda for Thursday meeting

The Higley Unified School District governing board will meet Thursday at the district office, 2935 S. Recker Road, Gilbert.

The board is expected to meet in a closed executive session to discuss Superintendent Joyce Lutrey's employment with the district. It wasn't clear from Friday's preliminary agenda whether the board would take any action regarding Lutrey during the open public meeting.

The board also will meet for a work study session at 5:30 p.m. to discuss boundaries for Centennial Elementary School. The board will then meet at 6:30 p.m. for the regular meeting, when it is expected to approve the Centennial boundaries. The school is planned to open in the fall in Power Ranch.

The board also is expected to approve a revised classified hourly salary schedule and next year's high school course catalog, open enrollment policy and 22-credit graduation requirements. Information: (480) 279-7000 or www.husd.org.

Middle schools bands hosts A World Holiday Celebration

The Queen Creek Unified School District Middle School band concert is 7 p.m. Monday in the Queen Creek Performing Arts Center, 22149 E. Ocotillo Road.
