The Mesa Historic Preservation Board announced the winners of the Historical Fiction Writing Contest.
The essays included fictional stories with real and imaginary characters on a historical event in World War II at one of Mesa’s military airfields.
The first place winner is Carolina Meza, sixth grader at O’Connor Elementary, for her essay on Falcon Field, “Falcon Field’s Dream.” Second place, belongs to fifth-grader Aubrey Boberg of Johnson Elementary for essay on Williams Field, “A New Name.” Pomeroy Elementary fifth-grader Sophia Hackett took third with her essay on Falcon Field, “Will It Ever End?”
The Mesa Historic Preservation Board members judged the essays on historical accuracy, writing and creativity. The winners will be recognized at the Mesa City Council meeting on March 3.
