Maria Menconi, superintendent of the Kyrene Elementary School District, will retire in June, a year before her contract was to expire.
Kyrene governing board members approved her request for early retirement Tuesday night at a regularly scheduled meeting.
Menconi said in a letter to board members that she wished to retire "in order to better support my husband and his career goals and opportunities."
District spokeswoman Karin Crider says the district has a history of conducting searches with "extensive community and employee involvement."
Menconi had worked in education for 29 years before becoming Kyrene superintendent in July 2002.
She acted as a principal and director of special education in the Chandler Unified School District, and also was associate superintendent and superintendent in the Fountain Hills Unified School District.
