Mesa's Red Mountain High School Academic Decathlon team won the state competition, held Friday and Saturday at ASU West. The team garnered 48,408 points after competing in 10 events: essay, speech and interview plus seven written tests focused on mathematics, science, economics, language and literature, music, art and social science.
The second place team was from Tucson's Canyon del Oro High School, with 45,174 points. Mesa Mountain View was third with 43,306 points.
The highest-scoring student in the state competition was Swaroon Sridhar of Mountain Pointe High School, with 8,778 points. Red Mountain competitors also took medals in the 10-event category. Jacob Cates finished with 8,691 points, Harrison Finzel with 8,689, Brandon Hertneky with 8,281, Evan Stabley with 7,730 and Alex Sabrowsky with 6,992.
Red Mountain will represent Arizona at the national competition, set for April 24-27 in Minneapolis, Minn.
