Gilbert Unified School District will remain on a traditional school-year calendar after a 5-0 vote by the governing board Tuesday night.
The board was presented with a number of options for when school would start and end next school year. Two options used a modified year-round calendar, with start dates in July and end dates after Memorial Day. The others followed the traditional calendar the district now has, with an August start and an end in May.
While there was a lot of support for a modified year-round schedule, assistant superintendent Shane McCord recommended that if the board wishes to consider that approach in the future that a long-term study be completed first.
McCord recommended the board approve the option with classes starting Aug. 7, 2013, and ending May 22, 2014, the Thursday before Memorial Day.
The board did that with a unanimous vote.

Newly seated board member Jill Humpherys shared a vignette about how hard it is to have kids in one family on different school schedules -- we've lived through that, and we agree it is a very difficult situation for any family. Thank you for sharing your personal perspective as the background for your vote!
