A capital planning director with Intel who has two children in the Gilbert Unified School District has been recommended to fill a vacant position on the district governing board.
Blake Sacha was named Wednesday as the first choice to fill the position that opened when Shane Stapley resigned last month. Stapley left the board after he moved out of the district boundaries.
The nominating group — made up of the superintendent, current board president and a teacher representative — also named two alternate nominees: Jason Barney and Deb Carr.
The final selection will be made by the Maricopa County Education Service Agency’s Don Covey, who is schools superintendent for Maricopa County.
The agency’s guidelines to fill a vacant position require that three names be submitted in order of preference. All three will attend a governing board workshop with Covey on April 21. A few days later, Covey will name the new board member. The oath of office is expected to be administered April 26, according to the district website.
The appointed member will remain in the position at least until the results of the Nov. 6 election are made official. Gilbert has four positions open on the five-member volunteer board during the November election: three four-year terms and, with Stapley’s departure, one two-year term.
Barney, a land developer and former high school assistant band director, and Carr, an involved district committee member, were on the recent Gilbert school district community budget committee with Sacha.
Sacha and Barney have already pulled board candidate packets to seek a spot on the Nov. 6 ballot. Sacha ran unsuccessfully in 2010.
Carr said undecided about running. Potential candidates must collect at least 400 signatures from the public and have them certified to get on the ballot.
Superintendent Dave Allison, board president E.J. Anderson and Diane Drazinski, president of the Gilbert Education Association, which represents district teachers, made the selection of the first-, second- and third-choice nominations from a group of seven that applied.
All three of the finalists have children in the district. Carr and Sacha are board members for the Gilbert Education Foundation.
