Parents of Mesa ninth-graders can learn about the district's sexual-awareness curriculum and meet the teachers in the next few weeks.
The Mesa Unified School District's Project MESA (Mesa's Education in Sexual Awareness) offers four lessons for seventh-graders and four lessons for ninth-graders on the physiological and psychological aspects of human sexuality. The program encourages sexual abstinence before marriage and emphasizes possible consequences of teenage sexual activity, including pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The ninth-grade curriculum also includes the subject of dating-violence prevention.
The ninth-grade meeting will be held 7 p.m. Aug. 14 at Mesa High School, 1630 E. Southern Ave. The seventh-grade parent meeting will be held 7 p.m. Aug. 20 at Kino Junior High School, 848 N. Horne.
