City and state champion Mesa Academy for Advanced Studies and runner-up Poston Junior High have qualified to compete in the National Academic League's Championship Tournament of Academic Excellence this spring.
"NAL is the super sport for junior high academic athletes," said Mary Evans, Mesa's National Academic League commissioner.
"Teams combine knowledge and strategy with a competitive spirit, one-on-one speed, teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving skills," Evans added.
National Academic League questions span 22 subjects in math, language, science, social studies and current events. Topics reflect local curriculum and national standards.
The Mesa Academy and Poston Junior High will face kids throughout the country via video conference. The National Championship Tournament of Academic Excellence is scheduled March 4 through April 26. Arizona State University will coordinate Mesa's video-conference matches.
"Congratulations to these winning teams and to coaches Joe Reilly and Michael Spencer of Mesa Academy, and Michele Wessel and Eilene Dougherty of Poston," Evans said. "Thanks also go to all the outstanding students, judges and coaches from all 12 junior highs whose dedication produced an excellent NAL season for all.”
