Mesa student Amanda Horvath says if she were given $5,000 to support education in her community, she would use it to provide food on weekends for those children who are on the reduced-price lunch program in her school district.

With her essay on the topic, the Mountain View High School sophomore won her age category in Olive Garden’s 16th-annual Pasta Tales essay writing contest. Horvath’s essay focused on AZ Brainfood, which takes the weekend feeding mission to heart.

More than 29,000 entries were submitted this year, and one winner from each grade was selected. As a grade-level winner, Horvath will receive a $500 savings bond and a dinner with her family at her local Olive Garden.
