Gilbert’s interim school superintendent began work Monday under the terms of a 12-month, $196,000 contract.
John "Jack" Keegan was selected from four finalists to serve as interim superintendent while the Gilbert Unified School District seeks a permanent replacement for Superintendent Dave Allison, who announced in January his plans to retire.
Keegan’s contract, sent via e-mail to the Tribune on Tuesday morning, shows his 12-month salary is $196,000, 2 percent of which will be paid should he meet pay-for-performance goals.
Keegan will not receive health, dental, life or disability insurance or a vehicle allowance during the terms of his contract, but could have a district vehicle available to use should he choose.
The contract also allows for a one-time $10,000 relocation allowance.
The contract is set to expire June 30, 2014, but either party can end the contract at any time, “preferably with a 30-day notice,” according to the terms. Should the contract is severed prior to June 30, Keegan's pay will be prorated.
The governing board hired Ray and Associates in late spring to conduct a search for a new district leader.
An email from Ray and Associates to the Tribune on Tuesday states: “Mr. Ray will be meeting with Gilbert in the fall to discuss the timeline and the process.” The tentative start date for the new leader will be next summer.
The board already held several community meetings about what traits the new superintendent should have. In feedback from 85 community members, key points included strong leadership, communication skills and education background.
Allison leaves the district after 20 years of service. He was named superintendent of the 39,000-student district in 2008. When his first three-year contract was complete in 2011, he signed a two-year contract. That contract ended June 30, but Allison agreed to stay for two weeks extra weeks – until July 12 – while the interim superintendent was hired.
Allison’s last annual contract included a base salary of $155,000. His total compensation package, with benefits, was $173,881.
