The Tempe Union High School District has set an all-time high with fifty-four students named as 2011 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.

It is the fourth time in five years that the district has had the highest number of National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists in the state.

The National Merit Scholarship program began in 1955 and honors students based on their Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test scores.

About 15,000 semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of all the high school seniors in the United States, will advance to finalist standing.
