The Gilbert Unified School District will seek out an interim superintendent to be in place as quickly as possible after current Superintendent Dave Allison retires July 1.

The board made the decision Wednesday during a special meeting.

The board would like the interim superintendent to work on the budget, employee morale and community relationship, address school boundaries and any necessary closures, move forward with the district’s strategic plan and conduct administrative staff reviews.

The board hired a search company a few weeks ago to conduct a nationwide search for a new district leader. Since it is anticipated it will take some time to find a new leader, the district board said it was necessary to find an interim leader.

“This interim superintendent will have some big, big shoes to fill,” board member Lily Tram said.

Allison announced earlier this year he would retire at the end of the current fiscal year on June 30. Allison was named superintendent in 2008. He has worked for the district in a variety of positions, including associate superintendent.

Jill Humpherys told the Tribune the interim candidate may not necessarily be someone currently employed by the district. Sometimes, she said, retired superintendents are put on contracts as interim superintendents.
