Gilbert school briefs: Charity basketball game to benefit Haiti relief

Faculty from Gilbert’s Greenfield and Highland junior high schools will play against each other in a charity basketball game to raise money for UNICEF’s Haitian relief.

Charity basketball game to benefit Haiti relief

Faculty from Gilbert’s Greenfield and Highland junior high schools will play against each other in a charity basketball game to raise money for UNICEF’s Haitian relief.

The game will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Highland High School gym, 4301 E. Guadalupe Road, Gilbert.

Admission is $3. Purchase of a ticket enters students in a raffle. Game shirts will also be sold.

Pregame activities at 6 p.m. feature a 200-plus student choir from both schools singing the national anthem. Information: (480) 632-4739.

Kindergarten prep classes available

Gilbert Unified School District parents can register their 4-year-olds in kindergarten prep classes starting at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the district’s community education office, 6839 E. Gilbert district board to meet Tuesday

The Gilbert school district governing board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the district office, 140 S. Gilbert Road, Gilbert.

Board members are expected to name a new district finance director and approve a policy on home-schooled students, admission of homeless students and student suspension, expulsion and due-process rights. The board is also expected to renew school principal contracts.

Mesquite hosting fundraiser for musicians

The Mesquite High School Symphonic Strings has been invited to Carnegie Hall in New York this spring to perform in the prestigious National Band and Orchestra Festival. The group is raising money for travel expenses.

The students will host a Carnegie Hall Preview Concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Villa Siena Reception Center, 890 W. Elliot Road, Gilbert. Tickets are $10. Businesses and individuals can join the Symphonic Strings’ Circle of Friends with sponsorship packages.

Meridian seeks vendors for May 14 carnival

Meridian Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Student Organization is seeking vendors for the May 14 school carnival.

Booth space is $35. Festivities will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Gilbert district school, 3900 S. Mountain Road, Mesa. Information: e-mail Francine Konieczny at francinekonieczny@yahoo.com.

Higley district board to meet Thursday

The Higley Unified School District governing board will meet Thursday at the district office, 2935 S. Recker Road, Gilbert.

The board will meet for a 5:30 p.m. work study session to talk about the budget, and then continue on to the regular 6:30 p.m. meeting.

Full-day kindergarten tuition fees are expected to be discussed and possibly approved. State lawmakers have proposed cutting state funding for full-day kindergarten for the upcoming school year.

Higley planning Centennial Carnival for March 5

Volunteers, donations and silent auction items are needed for Higley Elementary and Middle School’s Centennial Carnival.

The district and the school will celebrate its 100th birthday from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 5 at the school, 3391 S. Vest Ave., Gilbert. There will be food, rides, door prizes, music and game booths. Former students and staff are also invited.

Higley Unified School District was created by local farmers and dairymen to educate their children and the children of farm laborers before Gilbert was developed. Now, the district has more than 10,000 students, eight elementary schools and two high schools.

Edu-Prize hosting open house Tuesday

Queen Creek Edu-Prize will host its first community open house from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the school, 4567 W. Roberts Road, San Tan Valley. There will be tours, curriculum displays and slide shows. Edu-Prize is accepting applications for kindergarten through eighth grade.
