Gilbert Superintendent Dave Allison agreed Thursday night to stay on as “acting” superintendent until July 12 to help the district find an interim superintendent.
Allison announced in late January he planned to retire from Gilbert Unified School District at the end of the fiscal year on June 30. Allison has been superintendent of the district since 2008.
The governing board hired Ray and Associates this spring to help it find a superintendent. But with June 30 deadline looming and potential candidates already in contracts, the search for a permanent leader may move into early next year, making a need for someone in the interim.
“How can we hire a permanent superintendent over the summer when our constituents are not available?” board member Jill Humphreys said. “We want the community, teachers and administrators to have input. That’s why an interim.”
The board plans to interview four interim candidates next week, she said.
