The Gilbert Unified School District has moved its Tuesday governing board meeting -- when the board will vote on whether to close Gilbert Junior High -- to the cafeteria of Mesquite High School.
The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at Mesquite, 500 S. McQueen.
The governing board will hear a proposal from the district to alter the boundaries for five of the six junior high schools with the closing of Gilbert Junior High. The plan would move Gilbert Classical Academy into the buildings at Gilbert Junior High School.
Gilbert Junior High enrollment is now around 600 students, down from more than 1,000 in 2003. Gilbert Classical Academy has filled its space in a former elementary school site at Elliot and Greenfield roads. It has more than 400 students in seventh through 12th grade, with 100 on a waiting list.

I never new anything about School politics until my child started to attend GPS schools , which used to be rated the highest, Are teachers deserve more, are students deserve more' And we should not give one more dime until we get what the Tax Payers pay for, are schools'

I attended the meeting & found it very interesting that Dr. Allison confirmed that 15% of the students that attend GCA are children of Gilbert Public school employees & that many of the other students are out of district students!! Yet they want to split students at Gilbert Jr to other surronding Jr. Highs. These kids had a hard enough transitioning to Jr. High & meeting new friends then to be split up & start over at a new school. Some of these kids are going to schools more than 5 miles away. When Dr. Allison was asked by a parent what is the district going to do for students that play sports & walk or ride their bike home from practice & now are miles away from home his response to the parents was that they would have to figure it out on their own. I didn't hear one good reason for splitting these innocent kids. My son said students were having melt downs at school when they heard the news about their school. I don't blame them. I hope the school board thinks about the impact this will have on our kids of Gilbert Jr. High.
