A Maricopa County Sheriff Office’s detention officer accused of stealing more than $7,000 from a safe in the Lower Buckeye Jail is facing charges of felony theft.
Sgt. Jason Vance, 31, was arrested on Wednesday by MCSO detectives after large sums of money were discovered missing from the safe during a routine check at the end of a shift.
Surveillance video from inside the jail led them to suspect Vance. Investigators said Vance admitted to the crime later in an interview. Detectives said Vance was aware he was in view of surveillance cameras and attempted to conceal his actions.
In a statement, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said, “It is a very sad situation to have to arrest one of my own officers but this is a clear act of a crime and he must be held accountable.”
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says it is in the process of researching new technology that will allow jail personnel to bypass the handling of any cash brought in by inmates or deposited by their families while they are in custody.

What was he thinking, that was the MCSO's swastika budget! There's some things you just don't mess with. Now he knows!
