Mesa police are offering what may seem like an unconventional tip to fight crime: Get to know your neighbors. The city's annual neighbor-meeting push will take place Nov. 5, for the 14th annual Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. that day, Mesa police, fire, neighborhood outreach groups, animal control and council members will attend GAIN parties across the city. The parties are designed to enhance community block watches and improve relationships with public safety to reduce crime.
The city has about 100 registered parties this year, up from 95 last year. Arizona began GAIN in 1998 as its own version of National Night Out. That August event discouraged participation given the state's intense summers.

I prefer to fight crime by keeping a 12 gauge next to my bed.
