A Mesa police officer was treated at Banner Gateway Medical Center for cuts on his head following a struggle with a suspect in a shoplifting incident on Saturday who was able to wrestle a Taser away from the officer.
Jason Roberts, 38, was arrested on suspicion of three counts of aggravated assault, possession of dangerous drugs and shoplifting about 11 p.m. after officers responded to a shoplifting call at Ulta Salon, 1614 S. Signal Butte Road.
As police questioned Roberts inside the store, he tried to run toward the front door, and as an officer was trying to block the front door, Roberts ran into him, knocking them both over and causing the officer to cut his head. After other officers on the scene caught up to Roberts, they also struggled with him and attempted to activate their Taser on him. However, Roberts was able to take the Taser away from one of the officers before they were able to get it back as two officers simultaneously stunned him, police said.
Roberts was taken to Mountain Vista Hospital before he was booked, police said.
