Authorities in Maricopa County say 11 illegal immigrants have been arrested as part of an ongoing 30-day operation aimed at human smuggling.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio says nine suspects have been booked into jail on human smuggling charges. Two others were turned over to federal authorities.
The arrests were made this week after sheriff's deputies pulled over a pickup truck and found 10 illegal immigrants in the back covered with a tarp. A passenger fled the scene and escaped.
Authorities say the suspects admitted to paying up to $4,000 each to be smuggled into the U.S.
Arpaio says one suspect has an extensive criminal history in the U.S. and has previously been deported four times.
Arpaio says 53 illegal immigrants have been arrested during the 30-day operation.

Wouldn't it be more effective to use our own military at the border. They are amazingly well trained and in need of transitioning to new jobs as we leave the Middle East to their own demise.
After all, it is an invasion of our country that other countries do not tolerate.
The only reform our immigration policy needs is faster processing times for educated employable people that want to come here from other countries.
We have more than enough uneducated poor people. That quota is filled. Let's move on to people who do not need billions in social services to survive.

Illegal immigration peaked in 2007 at an estimated 12 million (probably higher) under Bush. Were you upset with Bush's lack of action? Again, Obama has deporting 1.4 million. Why hasn't anyone decried the influx of OTM'S? Illegal is illegal and all who fall into this category should be dealt with appropriately. We are a nation of law-abiding citizens, bound to the ideals and mores woven into the very fabric of our society. Border security first, and not just on our southern sector. Realistically, we cannot deport the tens of millions already here. However, we can offer a program to allow those hidden in the shadows such a restrictive policy to citizenship that their only option is to remain in the shadows or become a productive member of our society. Join the armed forces, or get in back of the line with fines, and additional scrutiny, complete medical testing, criminal background checks, financial credibility review, renounce loyalty to their former country of origin, must be proficient in a trade or have a college education. and offer a lengthy, hand-written report, complete with reasons of why they should be admitted. This would insure that only the "cream of the crop" would gain citizenship. Those already here illegally would find life so miserable, they may self-deport, or continue hiding from the authorities.
