Guns are piled inside a crate outside a police station in Tucson, Ariz., Tuesday, Jan 8, 2013, during Tucson City Councilman Steve Kozachik's gun buy back program. Kozachik asked people to turn in their guns for a $50 gift certificate to a Safeway grocery store. Tuesday marked the second anniversary of when a gunman opened fire on former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords as she met with constituents in 2011, killing six people and leaving 12 others injured. (AP Photo/Brian Skoloff)

They can have my gun when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Giffords certainly has reason to react this way about guns, but there are of millions of people who fester with an unreasonable fear which is born out of hysterical ignorance. Some of them know that the chance they will be attacked with a gun is almost zero. Still, they don't want anyone to have one.
Everyone wants to nitpick on assault rifles. Bans on high capacity magazines or assault rifles will do nothing. Law abiding citizens won't suffer because of a few crackpots who commit crimes with a gun. Law abiding citizens will suffer because of the pervasive hysterical ignorance about guns.
Where does this omnipotent hysteria really come from? Sadly, it comes from those few, who suffers from gun violence. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to those who suffer from gun violence, but it also goes to those who could have saved their life with a gun.
A ban on high capacity magazines and assault rifles will yield a warm and fuzzy feeling for some. Laws passed just for a warm-and-fuzzy feeling are stupid and unnecessary.

I may agree with bungknock to an extent, but I would seperate the ban on high capacity magazines and assault rifles. I don't understand the want or desire for people to own or have these. If it is for hunting I think that is crazy- like shooting fish in a barrel. If for target, why not have facilities that can have available for target shooting and not for individual ownership. While I will agree that most people who own these are legal and law abiding, I don't understand the fundamental reason why people should need them.

"by a mentally ill gunman." - Sadly, they aren't addressing the REAL PROBLEM.

Donated. I want someone who represents people in the discussion. I urge everyone else to contribute to Giffords' efforts.
