A man who Mesa police say admitted to firing shots from a handgun at a police helicopter and hitting it once, was arrested on assault-related charges on Thursday.
Ronald McCown, 30, was arrested shortly after 9 p.m., minutes after police responded to a family fight in the 8800 block of E. Dallas Street. As police were enroute to the house, McCown’s wife alerted police that he drove away in an SUV with an AR-15 rifle inside the car, according to Mesa police.
As the helicopter was in pursuit of McCown, he returned to the house, exited the vehicle and fired a handgun at the helicopter, hitting it once and causing minor damage to it, police said.
McCown, who surrendered without incident, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault on police officers and could be facing other charges.
