The Arizona Department of Public Safety honored 28 of its officers who died in the line of duty during a ceremony in front of its Fallen Officer Memorial on Monday.

The ceremony, which takes places annually, precedes the nationally recognized Police Memorial Week that recognizes both fallen officers and the sacrifices of their families.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Arizona has lost 246 officers since it became a state in 1912, and will be adding five names this year to the national memorial wall in Washington D.C. of officers who were killed in the line of duty during 2011.
