Three Chandler men are facing felony charges and eight others were cited connected to cockfighting offenses after police discovered nearly 30 roosters and three hens at a residence on Sunday.
Efren Gonzalez Maldonado, 40, Daniel De La Vina, 44, and Julio Cesar Lopez, 44, all Chandler residents, were arrested on suspicion of cockfighting offenses, according to Chandler police.
About 1 p.m., police initially responded to reports of vehicles blocking the 100 block of Ithica Place. Moments after officers arrived, they discovered about 15 to 20 people in the backyard watching a fight between two roosters. Police then discovered 25 roosters including a dead one and three hens in cages and numerous ones severely wounded from alleged cockfighting, according to police.
Officers also found gaffs, which are razor sharp attachments placed on the roosters legs to help inflict damage to opponents as well as vitamin B, steroids and other antibiotics used to treat injured roosters.
The eight individuals cited for being present at a cockfight were released, police said.
