Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s lawyers face a Friday deadline for responding in court to the U.S. Justice Department’s civil rights lawsuit against the sheriff’s office.

Arpaio’s office is accused of carrying out a pattern of discrimination against Latinos in his trademark immigration patrols and having a culture of disregard for basic constitutional rights.

The Justice Department filed its lawsuit nearly a month ago in federal court after settlement talks were called off when the sheriff refused to agree to a court-appointed monitor who would help enforce a settlement of the civil rights allegations.

The sheriff has said the lawsuit was a politically motivated attempt by the Obama administration to win favor with Latino votes in a presidential election year and denied allegations of systematic discriminatory policing.

This is vintage Arpaio. Joe distained having to report to a Federal Judge on the issue of jail overcrowding stemming from a settlement agreement entered into by one of his predecessors. Does Joe think he is above the law? Or does Joe think he is the law?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've read that over 80% of ILLEGAL ALIENS happen to be of Hispanic or Latino ancestry. As long as every person that doesn't provide ID when legally stopped is treated as a possible ILLEGAL ALIEN, I see no racial profiling whatsoever....

It's a gimmick to get the Hispanic vote. It doesn't matter that Obongo hasn't really done anything for Americans of Hispanic descent, but the game is all about image and not about substance. I think Joe is in the same place we all are. Wait it out to see if Obongo manages to get another term. If he does then we are all royally scr3wed. Except for the conservative republicans like Dale.
