On Thursday, the Mesa Fire and Medical Department launched its “I Remember” campaign to help prevent childhood drownings.

Drowning is the leading cause of death in kids ages 1-4 in Arizona.

“Arizona ranks number two in the nation for childhood drownings under the age of five, and the reason behind that is because we have so many swimming pools,” said MFD’s Michelle Long.

The statistics hit far too close to home for Allison James. Allison and her family are featured in one of the public service announcements. One day she left her kids inside her house to go turn on the sprinkler system.

The sprinkler system malfunctioned, so it ended up taking Allison a couple of minutes to turn it on.

“I went straight inside and that’s when I saw the back door open. The kids took the high chair out to the back porch and used it to enter the pool,” said Allison.

That’s when Allison went to the backyard to find something that no parent ever wants to witness.

“I found Ian face down in the pool. I performed CPR right away and we were not able to get him back,” Allison said.

Allison hopes that her story will help prevent another tragedy.

“I loved him more than anything in the world. It can happen to you, please try to put layers of protection in to help save your kids,” said Allison.
