A 20-year-old man police say tried to rob a Circle K convenience store by threatening the clerk with a kitchen knife was arrested after authorities caught him driving the vehicle that fit the description of the suspect.

Armando Alverez-Gomez walked into the Circle K at 1605 W. Broadway Road about 3 a.m. Thursday, went behind the counter with the knife and told the clerk to open the safe, according to police. When the alleged robber learned that the safe could not be opened, he fled in a white Jeep before officers caught up with him at Dobson Road near U.S. 60, police said.

During the traffic stop, police confiscated the knife, and although Alverez-Gomez denied trying to rob the store, he was captured on video surveillance doing so, police said.

Alverez-Gomez, who is also is a suspect in other armed robberies and armed robbery attempts, was booked into the Mesa City Jail.
