Seven Mesa High School students were taken to the hospital Wednesday after allegedly smoking an unknown substance.

An official with the Mesa Fire Department said around 2 p.m., the Mesa fire and police departments were called to the nurse's office at the high school after seven juveniles between the ages of 14 and 18 were experiencing rapid heartbeats, signs of high blood pressure, and running mild temperatures.

According to the Mesa Police Department, all of the kids denied smoking anything illegal, but one of the teens said he was smoking spice.

Four of the students were taken to the hospital for elevated blood pressure, but are otherwise in stable condition.

Police said none of the teens were in possession of any illegal substances when police arrived.
