A man convicted of child molestation two years ago and placed on lifetime probation, is accused of trying to hold an 11-year-old boy against his will in the restroom of a Red Robin Restaurant on Monday.

John Isabel Chavez, 22, of Mesa, is being held without bond in a Maricopa County jail following his arrest moments following the alleged incident on suspicion of assault, unlawful imprisonment, disorderly conduct and DUI with a blood alcohol content of .08 or above, according to Chandler police.

Chavez, a registered sex offender, who was convicted of child molestation in 2010, but had his sentence suspended in lieu of being placed on lifetime probation, was arrested following a one-vehicle collision in his pickup truck near the restaurant at 3420 W. Chandler Blvd. where the alleged incident happened about 6:30 p.m. on Monday, according to police.

The boy told police that Chavez grabbed him in the restroom, rubbed his shoulders and told him that he would be at his house later that evening. When the boy tried to leave the restroom, Chavez blocked his path, according to police. The boy then told his mother what happened and she called police as Chavez left in his truck, police said.

Chavez was arrested shortly after he was treated at a nearby hospital for his injuries.

All of the offenses Chavez was arrested for are misdemeanors, but he also faces the possibility of his probation being revoked, according to Chandler police.
