An 70-year-old woman traveling on an electric, four-wheel scooter was killed Thursday morning when she was struck in a Mesa crosswalk.
According to Mesa police, Ernestine Mathis was traveling north about 11:30 a.m. on 56th Street in the crosswalk of the intersection at Main. The light for crossing traffic changed from red to green before Mathis was completely across the street. Witnesses say two lanes of westbound traffic stopped for Mathis, but a truck on the far north lane apparently did not see her and struck her in the crosswalk.
Mathis was declared dead on the scene, police spokesman Steve Berry said.
There was no indication of impairment on the part of the driver, he said. The investigation is ongoing.

The driver obviously was not practicing situational awareness.
