A Tolleson city community services employee who works with youth and elderly people is being held without bond at the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail in connection to an ongoing sexual assault investigation in Tempe.
About 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, police arrested Michael David White, 49, of Goodyear, on suspicion of two counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual conduct with a minor. Police believe there may be more victims. White was apprehended during a traffic stop in the 900 block of North 99th Avenue in Tolleson without incident, Tempe police said.
On Sunday, a man reported to Tempe police that he had been sexually assaulted by White when he was a minor. After police investigated the complaint, officers developed additional information and evidence related to the case.
White was employed as a social worker at Tolleson High School for more than 15 years, according to Tempe police.
The news of White’s arrest came as a shock, Tolleson City Manager Ray Medrano told the Tribune on Thursday.
White has worked for Tolleson for two years and has an “exemplary” record, Medrano said.
Medrano said that since White remains incarcerated, no city officials have spoken to him and no formal action such as suspending him from his job pending the outcome of the investigation has happened.
“It’s premature to commit to any actions without having more details,” Medrano said.
