Thirteen lawyers have applied for a state Supreme Court vacancy.

The applicants for the state high court seat vacated by Justice Michael Ryan's recent retirement include Court of Appeals Judges John Gemmill, Diane Johnsen, Maurice Portley, Ann Scott Timmer and Lawrence Winthrop.

Superior Court Judges Robert Brutinel of Yavapai County and James Beene of Maricopa County also applied.

Other applicants include state death penalty prosecutor Kent Cattani, election lawyer Lisa Hauser and Regina Nassen, a senior lawyer with the Pima County Attorney's Office.

A state commission will recommend at least three finalists to Gov. Jan Brewer, and she will appoint Ryan's replacement.
