Gasoline thieves are targeting cars parked overnight in driveways and this time, they’re stealing the fuel by drilling into the gas tank.

Chandler police confirm this type of theft has occurred at least three times in the past week to vehicles near Kyrene and Ray Roads.

It appears more people are victims, they just don’t know it.

ABC15 found a probable fourth victim who assumed his car’s tank just deteriorated to the point of creating a hole.

He discovered the leak Friday morning when he went to fill-up at the gas station.

“It will literally pour out from underneath this tire and flood,” said the Chandler man who asked us not to use his name.

ABC15 became aware of the criminal activity when one of our employees learned she was a victim.

She sent her SUV to get repaired and the mechanic pointed out the two drilled holes.

The thefts may not be isolated to Chandler since that neighborhood borders Tempe.

Wow, that's pretty bold. Seems like dogs would hear that and go nuts. Pretty disgusting actions. Hope they get caught soon.

These thieves are definitely on the high end of stupid. If they are drilling, drilling causes heat. Sometimes red hot heat if the bit is dull. Guess what happens next?

Maybe after the next tank blows up on them they can be on Americas dumbest criminals. Personally, I'll just laugh.

Of course, if they got hurt, they'd get hospitalized (we'd pay), they'd go to jail (again, on our dime), they'd be tried (our expense), and probably sue the drill manufacturer or the gas tank/car builder. Maybe they'll write a book, have a movie about their life, and end up collecting royalties!
