A Tempe man has been sentenced to life in prison after causing a crash in which an 11-year-old boy died .

David Wiggins had been found guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated assault, unlawful flight and endangerment in the October 2011 accident that also injured the boy’s father and younger brother.

Police said the collision happened after Wiggins was seen leaving a bar parking lot near Alma School and Knox roads by an officer who began following the pickup truck.

The officer lost the suspect and broadcast an “attempt to locate” call.

Another officer was nearby, waiting for the suspect vehicle to possibly go by when she heard a violent crash.

When she went to the scene, she saw one of the vehicles was the white pickup truck driven by Wiggins.

In the other vehicle were a man and his two sons. The 11-year-old had critical injuries and later died. The 7-year-old boy had serious injuries and the father was treated at the hospital and released.

Wiggins was treated at the hospital for his injuries and when he was released was arrested.

Wiggins is eligible for parole after serving 35 years.

He was also sentenced to 19 years for aggravated assault, 1.5 years for unlawful flight and 2.75 years for endangerment. The counts will run concurrent according to a court official.
