Chandler residents who live along a five-mile stretch in the heart of the city won’t have to hear Union Pacific Railroad lines pass by on a regular basis anymore.

The quite zone, which began on June 3, covers 12 UPRR railway crossings located east of Arizona Avenue between Elliot Road and Germann Road, with restrictions in place 24 hours a day seven days a week. Conductors can use whistles for safety situations like a pedestrian walking close to a crossing or when a car is stopped on the tracks.

The new quiet zone comes in addition to one enacted three years ago along the railroad’s Tempe line west of Kyrene Road and between Ray Road and Chandler Boulevard.
