When Chandler celebrates its 100th birthday next May, it will need a special cake for the party of the century. So the Chandler Centennial Committee is inviting those who decorate cakes to enter the Centennial Birthday Cake Contest presented by Basha's, Food City and A.J.'s Fine Foods.

Participants will submit their design for preliminary judging, and if chosen as a finalist, bake and decorate their cake for final judging and public sampling at the "Happy Birthday, Chandler!" event May 17. You are expected to pay for your own supplies and ingredients, and to provide 200-500 cake servings for the May 17 event. Designs that use cupcakes are allowed.

Contestants can enter as individuals, or as two- or three-person teams representing a local bakery, restaurant, catering firm, culinary school or other business. The public will vote on the winner of the third category, the People's Choice Design Award. Prizes will be awarded in each category.

Entries must be postmarked or received by Nov. 29. There is no fee, but you must be a Chandler resident or work within the city limits. You must also be at least 18, unless you are a high school student on a team in which at least one member is 18 or older.
