Two children remain in “critical condition” at a Valley hospital Sunday after the vehicle they were riding in was struck by a truck in Chandler.

Sgt. Joe Favazzo, spokesman for the Chandler Police Department, said the driver of an F250 truck lost control of his vehicle, left the roadway, and ultimately smashed into a Nissan Pathfinder around 11 a.m. Saturday, seriously injuring its passengers, which included three children under the age of three years old.

Forty-three-year-old Nathan Painter faces multiple charges of aggravated assault, endangerment and hit and run. Speed and impairment are factors in the crash.

Painter was traveling westbound on Ray Road approaching Arrowhead Drive when he lost control of his vehicle, left the roadway, and went through a nearby retention basin. The vehicle went airborne coming out and struck the rear passenger window of a Nissan Pathfinder traveling northbound on Arrowhead.

Police say the driver of the truck fled the scene into a nearby neighborhood where he was followed by witnesses.
