The community outreach coordinator for the Chandler Police Department has been recognized as the top person in her area of work.

Melanie Slate has received the Lucia Causey Excellence in Volunteer Management Award, the city announced on Friday. Slate was selected from among all the non-profit and government volunteer coordinators in Central Arizona.

The award honors a volunteer program administrator who reflects the high ideals of the profession and whose dedicated efforts allow volunteers to produce significant achievements. The award is named for Lucia Causey, who, as former executive director of the Volunteer Center of Maricopa County, past president of Valley of the Sun DOVIA, and founder of the Corporate Volunteer Council, heavily promoted volunteerism.
