October brings Chandler recreation special events

Now that October has arrived and football season is well under way, it is time for Chandler Recreation school intersession camps to begin this week followed by a variety of all-ages community special events later in the month. From the annual Day of Play event and Rhythm Fest to Halloween festivities, this month offers an entertaining variety of outdoor activities to welcome fall.

The fall Break Time magazine outlining recreation classes and events is available at City facilities, libraries and recreation centers and online at www.chandleraz.gov/breaktime. Registration is still open for fall classes through November and youth intersession camps that will run through October 12. For more information, call 782-2727.

The winter Break Time will be available beginning Friday, October 19 and outlines programs in December, January and February. Registration for winter classes starts Saturday, November 3 at 10 a.m. (Friday, Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. for non-residents).

Chandler Tennis Center Fall Hours

The Chandler Tennis Center begins its fall hours on October 1 as follows: Monday-Thursday: 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 3-10 p.m.; Friday: 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 6-9 p.m.; Saturday: 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sunday: 12-5 p.m. For more information, visit www.chandleraz.gov/tennis or call 782-2650.

Mesquite Groves Dive-In Movie is October 12 On Friday, Oct. 12, Mesquite Groves Aquatic Center will present a “dive-in movie” with a showing of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” The movie starts at 6 p.m. and admission is $1 for children and $2.25 for adults. Sonoran Sunset Series Continues Thursday, Oct. 25 On Thursday, Oct. 25, the Environmental Education Center’s “Sonoran Sunset Series” outdoor fall entertainment continues at Veterans Oasis Park (northeast corner of Chandler Heights and Lindsay roads) with Halloween-themed music at 6 p.m. Participants are welcome to bring blankets, chairs or food. Halloween Spooktacular is Friday, October 26

The Chandler Recreation Halloween Spooktacular will be held Friday October 26, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the downtown Chandler Library courtyard. Admission is free and everyone from toddlers to teens will enjoy carnival games, arts activities and a haunted house. Games will include pumpkin bowling, scary piñatas and cupcake walks, and every participant will receive candy at each station, so bring those trick-or-treat bags. For the younger crowd, there will be pumpkin painting and face painting. The costume contest is always popular for all ages, and a winner will be selected for each age group in the following categories: best family or group; scariest; best superhero; best cartoon character and best princess. Mayor Tibshraeny’s Day of Play is Saturday, October 27

Saturday, October 27 promises to be a fun morning for everyone at Tumbleweed Park as the City of Chandler Community Services Department presents Mayor Tibshraeny’s Day of Play from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. This free community event for all ages will feature more than 100 vendors and activity stations that promote health and wellness while also commemorating Chandler’s recent selection as a “Playful City USA” winner for the sixth consecutive year. Fall Rhythm Fest is Saturday, Oct. 27

Following the Day of Play, Tumbleweed Park will also host the Fall Rhythm Fest on Saturday, October 27 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Enjoy an evening of free music followed by fireworks at 9 p.m. Just bring a chair or blanket; there will be food, beverages, merchandise and games available. Mesquite Groves Aquatics Center Hosts “Haunted Swamp”

In keeping with the Halloween spirit, Mesquite Groves Aquatic Center presents its second annual “Haunted Swamp” event on Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 4-6 p.m. Chandler Aquatics staff will have a variety of Halloween-themed activities and games for people in costume and swimmers in the pool. Admission is $1 for children, $2.25 for adults and $1.25 for seniors. The pool is located at 5901 S. Hillcrest Dr. next to Basha High School. Mayor’s Golf Challenge is Friday, Nov. 9

Chandler Mayor Jay Tibshraeny’s Committee for People with Disabilities presents the 16th annual Chandler Golf Challenge at Bear Creek Golf Complex at 500 E. Riggs Rd. on Friday, Nov. 9 at 12:30 p.m. Foursome teams, individual players and sponsorship opportunities are available. The event’s proceeds benefit Special Olympics Chandler programs and participants with physical and developmental disabilities. Fall Family Nights

Join in the fun at Family Night at Tumbleweed Recreation Center every Wednesday from 5:30-7 p.m. There is a different activity each week.
