How many people married 65 years ago could still fit into their wedding clothes today — and look as happy as they did on their wedding day?
We don’t know, but you’ve got to admire Chandler couple Glenn and Ila McCollum, who recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Ila wore her original wedding dress and Glenn wore his wedding suit coat.
Ila Bearden, a Chandler native, met Glenn at the Chandler Nazarene Church when he visited her brother following World War II. After a brief courtship and Ila’s graduation from Chandler High School, they married on July 29, 1947. On the GI Bill, Glenn graduated from Phoenix College, then went on to Arizona State College (now ASU), where he studied architecture. They raised a family and were very active in the Chandler community. Glenn was the architect for numerous schools, churches, homes and other buildings in the area and served on the City Council, and in Rotary and Lions clubs. Ila was PTA president, started an interdenominational Bible study and was active in her church.
Glenn and Ila’s five children — Peggy Haase, Myra Wagner, Glenna McCollum-Cloud, Doug McCollum and Steve McCollum — as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren, recently helped the couple celebrate 65 years of marriage.
Happy anniversary, Glenn and Ila!
