The Chandler Police Department is investigating an incident where a man called in a bomb threat at an area Walmart.

In a press release, Chandler Police spokesperson Sgt. Joseph Favazzo said the incident began when a man called a Walmart located at 1175 S. Arizona Ave. this morning and claimed he was bringing a bomb to the store. The man claimed he was upset about a shoplifting incident.

Walmart began to evacuate the store with the assistance of the police, and bomb techs and canine unites from Chandler, Mesa, Tempe and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office conducted sweeps inside and outside the store. The search is expected to take up to three hours to complete.

The police are investigating the threat, and Favazzo recommends people stay away from the area of Arizona Avenue and Pecos Road due to heavy traffic and the police presence.
