Chandler’s Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) Facility, which opened in 1996, on Thursday pumped its five billionth gallon of recycled water back into the ground, according to a release from the city. That’s enough water to fill Tempe Town Lake six times or supply water for 45,000 Chandler households.

Working with Intel, the city uses the latest technology available for the treatment of industrial process water for three of Intel’s FAB facilities. The process takes the wastewater back to drinking standards, then puts it back into the ground as a renewable resource.

Intel donated the land for the plant, paid to have the facility constructed and also pays Chandler to operate it.
