Police arrested a man on suspicion of robbing the San Tan Credit Union on Monday, soon after officers stopped a vehicle and found the suspect in the trunk with the cash.
Chandler and Tempe police, in a joint investigation, said a man entered the credit union at 78 W. Ray Road in Chandler about 10:40 a.m. Monday and demanded cash. Once the teller emptied a drawer full of money, a witness saw the robber run out of the bank and flee in the vehicle, according to police.
A Tempe officer who was working traffic enforcement in the area of Butte and Southern avenues in Tempe saw a vehicle matching the witness’ description speed by and stopped it.
In addition to the woman who was driving the vehicle, police said a 2-year-old boy was in the car and the cash was in the trunk with the suspect.
Authorities are not releasing the suspect’s name or picture at this time, citing an ongoing investigation by the FBI to determine whether he is connected to other robberies in the area.
