As part of its new provisional status as a Level I Trauma Center, Chandler Regional Medical Center soon will begin training general surgery residents.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the Residency Review Committee for Surgery has approved CRMC as an integrated site for the El Paso, Texas-based William Beaumont Army Medical Center’s General Surgery Residency Program, effective in June.

CRMC last month received provisional status from the Arizona Department of Health Services, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services as a Level I Trauma Center. The American College of Surgeons requires educational and research components in addition to state requirements for its Level I accreditation. The WBAMC residency program will fulfill the educational requirement.

Dr. Forrest “Dell” Moore, CRMC medical director and section chief of trauma, was named associate program director for Chandler Regional and sister hospitals Mercy Gilbert Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix. Moore will serve under the direction of Lt. Col. Kurt Davis, program director for WBAMC’s General Surgery Residency Program.

“We are honored to be associated with the doctors who will be healing our heroes,” Moore said. “Our residency program will train the very Army surgeons who will be treating and caring for our Armed Forces.”

Two or three post-graduate surgical residents will rotate through the CRMC program every two to four months. These surgical residents will be trained in trauma and critical care, general surgery and thoracic surgery.

“The residents will get a broad surgical case load,” Davis said. “Dr. Moore and his staff are very dedicated to education. Chandler has a brand-new center, in a fast-growing area which lends itself to regional referrals.”
