The Western Canal multi-use path in Chandler will be closed between Alma School and Price Roads for three months beginning Nov. 1.
The closure of the path frequented by bikers, joggers and walkers is to accommodate canal maintenance. Salt River Project is closing both sides of the canal for work crews to install a concrete lining to help reduce water loss. The work will take place during winter months when water demand is low to minimize the water interruption of SRP customers, including municipalities.
The work will involve the collection and relocation of that White Amur fish that help eliminate aquatic weed growth in the canal.
The concrete path is located on Chandler’s northern boundary and connects to Tempe’s path to the west at Price Road and to Gilbert’s trail to the east at the Union Pacific Railroad. Chandler worked with SRP to make the canal’s maintenance road available for multi-use and completed the bicycle and pedestrian path in 2010.
