Chandler police detectives now consider the dead son of a slain 80-year-old woman as the suspect in her death after police have examined, as evidence, a kitchen knife they believe was used to kill her.
The body of Beverly Finney was found stabbed multiple times inside her home about 11 a.m. on Jan. 20 after a woman called police requesting a welfare check at her house near Dobson and Queen Creek roads.
Her son, Greg Bilton, 56, who lived with her at the residence, died the following day after crashing Finney's Cadillac near mile post 295 on State Route 260, police said.
The investigation into her death is ongoing and detectives are following up on leads and evidence they have collected while awaiting an official ruling on Finney's death from the Maricopa County Medical Examiner.
"We have lost the ability to talk with Greg Bilton, so we must rely on evidence collected from the scene to bring into focus what exactly happened to Beverly Finney and who is responsible for her death." said Sgt. Joe Favazzo, a Chandler police spokesman. "There were obvious signs of foul play when officers found Finney's body."
Chandler Police are investigating the homicide that left Finney dead and the Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash that caused Bilton's death.
